Let the Tree Survey Begin!
Calling all community members who love being outdoors! There is an excellent opportunity this summer for Ramsey residents and neighbors to get involved with the development plan for the future of Ramsey's urban forest! The City of Ramsey is performing a tree inventory survey, taking account of the species and condition of each public tree. Collecting survey data of public trees will allow the City to plan for threats such as the infamous emerald ash borer, which is devastating nearby ash tree populations, as well as to improve the stability of the urban forest by getting a sense for how much of a given type of tree is present, and to plan future plantings and tree maintenance.
This tree survey will be performed entirely by volunteers! The time commitment is open to individual volunteers. After completing the initial training sessions, volunteers will have the skills and equipment necessary for performing the survey, collecting data as often as they are able over the course of the summer and into the fall.
The two-part training is provided by educators from the University of Minnesota’s Department of Forest Resources. The first day will be a 3-hour indoor session focusing on survey skills like tree identification an measurements. Day two will be a 2.5-hour hands-on, outdoor field session, where volunteers put into practice the skills learned in the first training session.
